Jack,

If your twin flash is like my Nishika Twin Light 3010 then it is not 
automatic and puts out the same amount of light whenever it fires.  
You use guide numbers with it to adjust for the inverse square 
reduction of light with distance.  With ASA 100 and both lights 
pointing the same way my flash has a guide # of about 100 (F 5.6 at 
18 feet, F8 @ 12 feet, F11 @ 9 feet, F16 @ 6 feet, and F22 @ 4.5 
feet).  Experiment.
