I would expect that by the time digital imaging techniques for 
the most part displace film, due to truly superior quality, that 
drop-in digital devices allowing a film camera to be used as a 
digital one would be on the market. Such a device would fit 
where a film cassette normally fits, provide a full frame "CCD" 
and a means of storing a number of high resolution images. 
Granted there would be additional difficulties in providing such 
a system for stereo cameras. But the number of very capable 
"analog" camera systems in the world is too great to ignore or 
abandon. AFAIK, prototypes of this kind of thing have been 
under development for a few years already.
