I too was bothered by less than precise transfer and taping
when trying to hold the Spicer/RBT-jig sandwich together and
using their edges for alignment. I didn't have the benefit of
seeing Dr.Dave or Dr.T give a demo, which might have cleared
up technique details. So I just started using a "float" technique
that may be less "convenient" but offers perfect freedom to
make fine alignment adjustments in any direction, and place
the mount apertures anywhere within the chip pair.
I do the alignment flat on my light table work surface, using
metal weights to hold the paper mount still and to give enough
friction to the RBT jig so that it stays in place prior to taping the
chips down. I can start out with the mount and jig aligned just
by applying a straightedge, but then I move the jig around
while checking edge details in the right and left chips with a
strong Optivisor (head-mounted twin loupe). Particularly with
reduced height and reduced width mounts, the freedom to crop
selectively within the entire view is a plus. And with a bit of
effort, even the tiniest top and bottom edge details can be well-
matched left and right.
