I agree with David that more precise mounting is better in general, but
not just because one might want to project the images. I think the term
"precision" scares some people, but IMO there is amazing enhancement of
the stereo image that occurs *in a hand viewer* with just simply paying
attention to alignment and to the stereo window. Even using heat seals
with tabs, one can do a little window adjustment when needed, moving the
chips farther apart when there is an object in the view that is closer
than the window (about 7 ft with a Realist), or sometimes moving the
chips together a bit when there isn't a close object in the view, to
move the window a little further away. Of course the variety of aperture
sizes in the Spicers allow more window adjustment and cropping etc. And
projection allows less tolerance for minor mounting errors. But a nice
"window" without distracting window violations makes a big difference in
how good a slide looks in a viewer, IMO.

It helps to compare the same view mounted with and without the
adjustments, to appreciate the difference. I think it is like the light
leak problem around the tabs in heat seals, or tolerating Kodak level of
mounting quality: the slides look "fine" until you pay attention to the
problem and see how much better they can be. Even in a hand viewer.
Especially in a hand viewer, because that is the primary way I enjoy and
share my slides. -Linda
