Kudos to Tom Deering, George Themelis, and Bob Maxey for their great input to my original post "base calculator". Also to Mark Dottle my first mentor! Kudos to John Bercovitz who appears to have authored much of the early work!!
I recommend that any newcomer to Stereo visit Tom's page at http://www.deering.org/math/ . This is well written, and has links to Excel spread sheets that reduce data quickly to usable base settings.
Tom's page also invites you to contact him for help. Also read publications by Bercovitz and Themelis. In his article Tom also invites you to contact him for further discussion.
Tom readily admits on his page that his spread sheet does not work well for macro work. I am still looking for macro methods that will help a friend not on e-mail. He has a 105mm macro lens and wants to do stereo work from about 5 to 36 inches, and would like to have some recommended cha cha base settings. It is reasonable base settings will vary by his lens setting. That is, the base for a .25/1 magnification would be different than that for 1/1 magnification. Does anyone out there have base settings for .125/1, .25/1, .75/1, and 1/1 magnifications? Or a simple equation? This guy has designed a screw advance scheme that gives him very accurate base settings but needs help on settings.
With the early on help that Mark Dottle gave me, and now the responses to my "Base Calculator" posting this thing are coming together. You guys have a great network!
