I don't think that what eye you use for a camera viewfinder defines
"dominant eye", but rather I would refer back to the looking through a
small circle at arms length test etc. But I for one *do* use my dominant
right eye to look through a viewfinder. Although scientific studies
apparently do not show eye dominance (via the various tests previously
described) to be a consistent finding for many people, my experience and
"anectodotal reports" (i.e. previous discussions with friends) suggest
that for many of us, eye dominance is very consistent with these tests.
Which eye a person prefers to use for a particular task is not
necessarily the same thing, and may be influenced by other factors
including habit, practice, location of the viewfinder on the camera body
etc. And many individuals apparently do not have as strong an "eye
dominance" as I have, and might be more likely to use a different eye
for different tasks or at different times for similar tasks.

I guess I don't see the logic here if you are saying that is how you are
defining eye dominance. I myself consistently tend to close my
nondominant eye (as determined by the previously described "tests") and
use my dominant eye more comfortably when I need to squint in bright
light or otherwise use one eye preferentially, such as looking through a
rifle sight, a camera viewfinder, or a monocular microscope or
ophthalmoscope. (Theoretically one should keep both eyes open in some of
these situations, but I am able to ignore the extraneous left eye image
when looking through my right eye more easily than I would be able to
ignore an extraneous right eye image if I were trying to use my
nondominant left eye primarily.) It also feels really weird to close my
right eye and look though my left, probably because I am out of
practice.
Not that I am taking this cross dominance issue all that seriously, but
is interesting to me that apparently most of you out there are not as
lateralized to the right as I am, at least neurologically. But that
would mean I have more left hemispheric brain dominance, I guess, so it
isn't so inconsistent with my politics after all.... -Linda
