Absolutely true, but the post led me to think that a generalized
statement was being posted. I know that old mechanical things need
periodic work, and the post led me to think that a general inference was
being made between something's age and usefulness.

I come from a world of mechanical things. I love Pinball machines, slot
machines, old cameras, automatons, and old motorcycles. I also collect
mechanical calculators; a thing of beauty to work with, but a mechanical
nightmare. I know how well these things work - when they work, and what
is needed to keep them running. For the most part, these things work as
well or better than their modern counterparts.
