I don't have a repairman's practical understanding, but have 
been told that changing the speed after cocking exacerbates 
mechanical wear due to spring pressure, hence increased 
friction on cam plates and shaft bearings. It doesn't break 
things, but accelerates general wear and tear and perhaps 
hastens the onset of trouble.  

When I first noticed that not cocking a Realist shutter "all the 
way" usually causes the shutters to open (possibly spoiling a 
shot) I thought something was wrong, but this seems to be 
normal. Realists demand (and reward) thoughful, deliberate 
use. Cameras for gentle curmudgeons?  :>)
