[photo-3d] Re: Converting a Fed Projector to 110v

Imo, the simplest solution is to use a step-up transformer. The
FED projector has no sophisticated electronics to worry about,
and 60 Hz AC should be no problem. As I mentioned, a FED
was shown off during the last Kansai club meeting, using a step-
up transformer with the 100 volt 60 Hz Japanese mains current
in the area.

I recently needed to buy a 100 to 110 volt step-up transformer
for use with a Brackett Fader. I had to get one rated for 1000
watts as there was no 750 watt model, but it's not much bigger
than a grapefruit and not terribly heavy. While shopping for it, I
came across a wide variety of transformers for just about all
possible country combinations. The voltage doubling ones were
a bit larger for a given rating, and many have a flip switch so
they work equally well for step-up or step-down. Other models
had half a dozen tap plugs and mating input-output cables so
that a variety of voltage combinations could be selected. All of
the ones I saw use two prong cords (ungrounded) and have an
internal, non user-serviceable fuse. These are just basic
consumer items, perfectly adequate for most applications. And
they are expensive relative to what they are (mainly copper
wire and a case) because when you need one there are few
alternatives, so it's a seller's market.

If you can't find a basic 120 to 240 transformer locally (I
wonder if Radio Shack has these in their catalog), I'm sure you
could order one via the 'Net.
