I once did something similar to this. I bought an outlet box to which I
added a 240V socket plate. From this box I added two regular 120V power cords.
I then plugged them into separate outlets which were on opposite sides
of the incoming line so that the outlet box became a legit 240 outlet.
Of course, it takes some testing ahead of time to identify the sockets
and to make sure they're wired correctly (as well as my box being wired
correctly) ahead of time to prevent premature July 4 fireworks. :-)

Sometimes the easiest way for this method is to used a transformer that
has dual-primary windings. They usually are made for 120/240
"configurations", depending on how it's wired. One can wire the primaries
up in an auto-transformer configuration to provide the voltage boost.

If the projector has a fan, it's motor is likely "tuned" to 50Hz, so it
may require replacement. Running a 50Hz transformer is something that
seems like it'd work at 60Hz (if the 220V were produced).

Good luck again,

Mike K.

P.S. - I'm not a power engineer either, I'm much lower power digital and
I use power-supplies from Lucent, etc as black-boxes, more or less.
