It certainly is a valid and on topic question. Fascinating story regarding
tracking down some of your family history, in 3-D no less! Regarding
copying I'm in the process of copying some old stereocards but the
route I'm taking is scanning them instead.

If you take this route, theoretically 200dpi should be sufficient, but
I've found (at least with my scanner), I get better results scanning
at 400dpi and then downsampling the images. Advantages to going
this route is you can store A LOT of images on a CD and it would
be very easy to enhance any imperfections such as scratches
and such. If prints are desired, you can make monolith prints with
the new Fuji and Kodak photographic printers. The prices for prints
are very cheap and quality is excellent.

There are some P3D members on this list that have done this with
VM reels (Jim Harp comes to mind) that might want to add some 
more info on this. Also Dan Shelley has scanned in old prints to
CD and also might be able to offer some tips on this.
