Doug from Winnipeg asks why stereoscope lenses are prismatic.
Standard Holmes format stereocards have infinitiy spacing
of 3.25" or more.  As most of us have eyes that are only
spaced about 2.5" apart, it is difficult to impossible to
fuse the two images into a single 3D view using non-prismatic
lenses.  So generally speaking, yes, some sort of prismatic
lens is required for stereoscopes.
