I agree to the latter. However, in museums things are kept for 
future generations. 
The London Science Museum has several boxes with items from 
Charles Wheatstone's belongings. Wheatstone dead in 1875. 
Eventually Brian Bowers wrote a biography, in part based on 
these items, in 1975.
