Both the computer serving the files and the browser receiving 
them have to be "aware" of the mime type to work correctly. 
For some web page hosting services this is transparent (nothing 
need be done because practically all outgoing mime types are 
configured). For other services, help personnel have to be 
asked to configure the server for particular mime types. And for 
some services, configuration can be set via a user's personal 
"dot file", a simple text file with a leading "period", with 
contents such as       

AddType image/x-jps jps

which gives the mime type and the file extension.  

However, Jim Crowell wrote, and this is VERY important:

Which means that Macintosh users won't be able to enjoy jps 
files with Jim's Stereogler unless the "pluginspage" tag is absent, 
alas. Users of Irix, Linux, BSD, or other operating systems may 
have similar trouble, which may be avoided by doing without 
this tag.
