Yes, this happens to just about every TDC Colorist I or II at some point in its
lifetime. It is caused by a cheap plastic tab or something that holds the
plastic take-up reel onto the metal stem (a design flaw that was never corrected
despite it being addressed in the camera repair manual of the time and two
versions of the camera coming out). It needs a small set screw put into the
takeup spool through the stem. I sent mine to Jess Powell to have it done, but
many people on this list have done it themselves and probably will comment.
Although I can't speak for the Colorist I, I have the Colorist II and was quite
happy with the camera once it was repaired and think it is definitely worth
fixing.
