Correct!  I think 3 factors contribute to the appeal of this viewer:

1. Lower magnification = sharper-looking images
2. Lack of lenses = better than bad lenses
3. Stretch (tight to #1) = more apparent depth

These factors are also present in freeviewing.  Many people prefer
freeviewing to viewer-viewing, especially stereo pairs in publications
(like Stereo World) or computer screens.
