I used a charger from one of the three big names, and batteries
from two of the three big names.

Like Linda, I have been using the rechargeable alkalines in my
Red Button.  They have worked quite well, except that the first
pair of D size Renewals that I bought were duds (would not hold
a charge after the first cycle).  I had mixed results with the
AA Renewal batteries.  Although I did not keep hard data, it felt
like they expired long before I expected them to, and possibly
before I'd reached "break even" on the higher cost of the batteries
and the charger.
