I don't know anything about the scanners you mentioned, but I have a Umax Powerlook III which I love.  It works very well and has good scanning software.  I havn't used it for transparencies though.  For Scanning Transparencies I have a Nikon
Coolscan III which is a pain in the neck.  If the curves aren't adjusted just right it can generated terrible artifacts--especially with slides.
