Abram Klooswyk replied to my offer to tell a story of
an an "international incident" over the question "Is
the stereo window a valid theory?":
> O, please, Allan, don't keep us waiting!
Abram, you are teasing me. If I am not mistaken, you would have
been present at an ISU meeting of Country Reps and the ISU Excom
at one of the Congresses held in Europe a few years back. Back then,
things were a lot more polarised than they are these days. For one
thing, twin 2 X 2 was the system largely followed by stereo workers
in several Continental countries. Secondly, mounting for good stereo
window was the exception rather than the general rule. It was not at
all uncommon for presenters of congress feature programs to overlook
the window thing entirely!
Because of this situation, I summoned up the courage at the said
meeting to ask the question: "What can be done to ask presenters to
adhere to the rule that 'slides should be mounted for good stereo
window' "?
The Representative from one of the prominent Continental countries
got to his feet and said: "Members of the 'Utopia' Stereo Group have
decided that the so called 'stereo window' theory was conjured up by
the Realist Format lobby to embarrass us because we mount in twin
2 X 2 and we therefore deem the theory invalid". "What's more" he
added, "we haven't got the time to fiddle around with remounting when
the slides come back from processing so nicely ready-mounted for us".
While nobody at said meeting had the gall to press the issue, over
the intervening years much headway has been realised across the 3D
scene generally. I remember two specific occasions in the US when I
was asked to be guest judge for a Club Comp.. While I tended toward
flowery comment on the 3D subjects submitted, I tried to use the
occasions to point out the need for less window violation. On both
occasions I was taken aside afterwards and it was explained to me
that the competitors really only wanted "nice" things said about their
slides and that I would not be asked to judge there again!
Happy mounting for good window.
Allan
