God, I wish I could freeview...
Larry,
You are probably aware that the ability to do this comes with
practice. When a friend told me he could do it, I did not
believe him. But he gave me a few simple tips and I got so I
could do it. Now it is second nature and I can switch between
parallel and cross viewing with no difficulty whatsoever.
Since you mentioned photoshop, here is a great little exercise.
For your screen and resolution set up a stereo pair that is a
comfortable maximum size when viewed with a lorgnette. Let's
just say that the pair comes to a total of 600 pixels wide.
Then make a series of copies of this photo, maybe 10 of them.
Change the image size on each one so you have a progressive
series of widths. Smallest should be about 200 pixels, then 250,
300, etc. up to the 600. Center them all one on top of the other,
going from smallest to largest. The smallest one will have about
the same divergence as a magic eye picture. With that, try all
the tricks they tell you for magic eye. When you finally get
it to work, stretch your eyes a little more and look at the
second and over time, progress down till you can see the full sized
picture.
Many people find it easier to cross-view and learning to do
this was the single most magical 3D event I have experienced,
with the possible exception of seeing 3D for the first time
in any format or maybe seeing my first Medium Format views.
