IMO, understanding comes from deriving the formulas, not using
a formula that someone else derived. When I was starting
in stereo (12 years ago), I spent considerable time deriving
formulas and wrote programs to plot stereo pairs. This was
a fantastic educational experience for me. I learned a lot
from the assumptions that go into the derivations and the
way the different variables affect the end result. Today,
like DrDave, I do not use any formulas or measurements
of any type. Possibly this is an extreme, but it seems to
work for me.
