I will also "pledge" $20 if it is needed. 

Perhaps just the threat of small claims court and/or publicity would
help Grant in any negotiations? But then again the guy might just dig in
his heels harder, or enjoy the limelight. But I sort of understand the
other guy's point of view.If we didn't know that it was an accidental
"donation" by someone who greatly valued the item, who among us wouldn't
be thrilled at the windfall aspect of finding a valuable item at a
thrift store? Certainly some of those stories I hear of bargain
purchases from this group may have reflected "accidental" donations,
e.g. when the heirs of an estate do not realize the value of what they
are donating or selling. And most accidental donations are never
reported or traced.

I do hope that they can come to some agreement, even if it means
rewarding the guy with more money than we (in our infinite wisdom) think
he is entitled to. -Linda
