I agree with your assessment. My old Kodak stereo was my first 3D camera.
It's simple and convenient to use, and produced many terrific photos for me
over the years. As I've branched out, I haven't used it as often; but some
of my favorite images were taken with it. As far as where to get an
instruction manual for it (or for ANYTHING ELSE remotely connected to
photography), I'd recommend John Craig in Connecticut. His URL is:
