[photo-3d] Heartland Stereographic Society

Larry Ferguson asked if there is a stereo group that meets anywhere
eastern Nebraska or western Iowa. Right now the Heartland Stereographic
Society probably comes closest.
HSS is the continuation of the 3-D group begun by John Baird in 1999, not
long before his death that year. In the face of that loss, those of us
who remained - Lesia Winters, Darren Gunderson, Dave Williams and yours
truly - determined to continue in John's spirit as best we could.
Eventually detaching from the Kansas City Metro Photographers Association
out of which the group originated, we eventually named ourselves the
Heartland Stereographic Society. With Robert J. Vaughn, who joined soon
after, we have been the core - I call us the Foundling Members - of
perhaps the most informal 3-D club in the world. We generally meet on the
second Saturday of the month in Lawrence, Kansas, about 45 minutes west of
Kansas City. The meeting is from noon to 3:00, and usually consists of a
lengthy show-and-tell around a table in the basement of the Lawrence Arts
Center. Contrary to what you may expect, I don't hog the conversation -
and each member has brought a unique perspective and their own expertise
to the haphazard agenda.
We have shown signs of growth lately! This last Saturday, in addition to
the five original members, we were visited by collectors Elgin Smith and
William Coil. Elgin brought a fascinating collection of photographica,
stereo and not, with small novelty viewers, glass stereo slides,
unfamiliar stereoscopes - all from his collection dating from the 19th and
earlier 20th centuries.
Our special guest this month was Ernie Rairdin from Cedar Rapids. He came
with his assortment of slide and print viewers, including various
lorgnettes for our comparison, and a small mountain of print stereo views
he has made. Of particular interest is his series of US politicians,
shots he captures on their campaign jaunts through Iowa, when the
political season is high. It was a pleasure to see the special treatment
Ernie give the mounting and sleeving of his views - each one is a total
custom design idea and, though he would deny it, pretty darned
collectible. If only he had brought R J Thorpe along, it would have been
Cedar Rapids day at HSS. :-)
Davey (King of the Wild Frontier) Williams came with his latest
demonstration from the Fuji Frontier digital photo processor at the new
Walmart in KC. He is gradually learning to play the bells and whistles on
that beast. Two prints of Dave at work, one processed conventionally and
the other on the Frontier showed no compromise in image quality. He also
brought the latest package from the APECIII exchange. That group
continues to make ever more creative and unique stereoviews - and I hear
they are looking for new members! ;-)
Lesia, Darren and Bob also had contributions to make, and our table was
groaning with stuff to paw over. I brought taffy, to chew on. A true
embarrassment of riches. We may have to get a second table if this
continues.
In May, we are all planning to head up to Omaha to see what is worth
seeing, shoot the zoo and stuff. That's Larry F's turf, so maybe we'll
see him there?
Anyone who thinks they may be out our way some day, and who wants to know
more about HSS, contact me at this email address, or better at
