[photo-3d] Re: 3D Camera Synchronisation

I thank Ray for attempting to classify camera sync, but I would urge some
caution to those aspiring for th ultimate sync. I personally do not believe
automatically that higher numbered types that Ray mentions are necessarily
superior compared with lower numbered versions, and I know that Ray is not
intending to give that impression, but I have found that it is automatically
assumed so by many. There are also other possible versions - see my future
mods below - what will it be called?
I expect that on the whole, the more sophisticated the sync, then the better
the picture. But there are many points here. If you never need sync better
than 1/60th then you will not achieve much by going to the extra trouble.
Also depending on the cameras, a less sophisticated solution may even give
better sync that a more complicated solution
Furthermore I personally have not gone to a "full sync" or "slave master
modification" for my twin rig as I like the option of having two fully
functioning and independant cameras at my disposal - just remove the linking
cable and/or bar. I am however about to link up more than the so called
"wake up" sync on my Ricoh SLRs. The mod I have done already couples the
power, wake up and shutter firing and I will now couple the other functions
such as mode and speed. As for Sync, both cameras will be triggered through
their individual processors - this differs from the "slave master"
modification where one processor trips both shutters. The timing will be the
same or very close via the independant processors as all imputs will be the
same or similar and the firing of the shutters from the common power of one
camera will tend to sync both if there are minor timing differences (small
supply voltage drop). These differences should be zero to 1/2000th in
practice.
The benefits? As I said, I have two independant SLR cameras for whatever use
I wish. I also intend to build a digital delay circuit to fire either camera
by a known difference from the first. This will allow accurate spacial
control of moving images within a stereo pair - something a "Slave Master"
mod will not easliy and/or accurately achieve. The range will be 1mS to 10S
in 1mS intervals via a set of 4 thumb wheels.
I therefore believe that the "Full Sync" term is not an accurate discription
of what I would term more of a "one processor/2 shutter system". This is
because a fuller range of sync functions maybe obtained from the so called
"Wake Up" sync. Finally not all cameras require "Wake Up" thus this term
maybe misleading This is more of a "2 processor/2 shutter" sync. Then again
not all camers have processors......
