Actually, I was trying to put resolution into context. Whilst all the
scanner, camera et al manufacturers can only quote the output resolutions of
their devices (and many of those use the highly misleading "interpolated"
values!), very few users know what resolution they actually need! If only
people could think in terms of the number of pixels that they need for their
output! But even this can be misleading, with printer manufacturers quoting
"28800 dots" etc...
<<My question is for those on the list who output
to film recorders NOT using non-pin registered camera backs, what
is your experience with registration? My only test with a Polaroid
camera back showed that the digital duplicates are NOT registered,
and misaligned both vertically and horizontally. Worse yet, they
are not centered with respect to the slide perforations. This means
that the dupes from the recorder cannot be dropped into Wess pin
registered mounts. In other words, if you want proper alignment,
you must critically remount each duplicate pair! For me, that is
totally unacceptable. I am wondering if anyone has had alignment
success with a non-registered back. Can anyone comment on their
experiences?>>
Well, I can only speak for my Agfa PCR II / RasterPlus combination.
Firstly, the camera is not pin registered. But I've just cut three title
slides from the "Tribute to Handel" sequence which have white out type. I
used the same basic images for these and a variety of white type layers for
type other than the basic, so I have something like seven pairs of slides
which (as far as the headline, at least) should be identical.
I don't have a pin registering jig, so I used an approximation, but I can see
through three thicknesses of type and perfect perforations. I'd say that's
pretty close!
The RasterPlus software automatically centres the image in the frame, and
sizes it so it's as large as possible. Then it adds a black border. (I can
control this behaviour if I want to... One thing that I have to watch out for
is when I have a Realist or other "portrait" format image. The software
rotates it to get the image as big as possible...
