I think part of that "gutless" quality you're referring to is the fact
that the digital cameras are designed for a specific path (capture -->
print (either video or hardcopy)). A slide is a very different thing
than a print, and the way the colors need to be modified to make it look
right are not neccessarily intuitive. Guaranteed, however, the colors do
have to be adjusted.

It tends to the technical, and there is a fair amount of math, but if
you wish to skip the math there is usually a good explanation of what's
going on as well.
