Re: [photo-3d] Nimslo flash questions (was Nimslo questions)

There has been fairly recent discussion on photo-3d and on the macro-3d
list about the topic of how to get smaller apertures when shooting a
Nimslo with flash. (January 2001). Archives may be helpful on both
lists. (If you are not already on the macro list it is easy to
subscribe, and you can just view posts on line rather than getting email
if you prefer with any of the egroups that you only want to check in
with occasionally. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/macro3d )

Lincoln and others have used a small light bulb near the light sensor to
fool it into staying shut down and not opening up to 5.6 which is the
low light default for the camera when you put a flash on it. Most
Nimslos, of about a half dozen tested by list members, seemed to be
capable of this type of override, both UK and Japanese models. But at
least one camera still opened up to presumably 5.6 even with the bright
light. You can check your camera by opening the back (with camera empty
of course) and fire the shutter with the camera held up to a bright
light and with a flash on it, and check visually whether there is a
smaller opening with the bright light than without. Just putting any
flash on the camera seems to trigger the aperture opening only to 5.6
when fired, not just Nimslo brand and not just with the flash turned on.
But your results may vary.

Elliot had devised an internal electronic fix/override, but it might
only work on one version of the Nimslo (I forget whether it was a UK or
Japanese manufactured camera that he had modified). I believe this is
similar to the modification that is done on the Burdlo to allow for
smaller apertures with flash use. (The Burdlo is David Burder's modified
Ninslo that has been converted from 4 half frames to 2 full frames.
Sounds nice, but these are expensive.)

This on my "to do" list for my Nimslo, as I would like to have better
options for closeups with good depth of field (besides only shooting in
bright sunlight, which is my current method.)

Anyone with anything new on this topic, or clarification/pictures of how
to do it? A little more discusion wouldn't hurt. -Linda
