As far as I can remember it has to be switched on or you could use it for the method you describe below.

This is correct and I discoverd this for myself although I cannot now think why I tried it,as I mentioned above simply attaching the flash switched off wont do it so there cannot be any circuit with the flash switched off. P.J.Homer
