I seem to recall some mention this past fall on P3D from someone who looked
into this. They said that the digital camera makers were not very
consistent in locating the CCDs from one camera to the next, causing
alignment problems with the images. Apparently very tiny variations in CCD
placement can cause relatively large (for our purposes) variations, which
would necessitate careful cropping with every pair. Add to that the typical
variations in lenses, and it may not be all that simple to hack a couple of
digicams together for stereo.

But I have to ask, why bother with cutting and joining (which seems implied
by the term, "hacking")? With these cameras, side by side mounting seems a
much more elegant solution. And if the images are badly mismatched, one
could buy a third digicam and sell off the one which least matches the
others.

Personally, I think I'm going to wait until digitals get to be about 10
megapixel for $150....in the meantime, I'm having too much fun trying out
different dinosaurs (oops, I mean '50s cameras) and mounting and viewing my
slides. :) But hey, different people are going to like different things,
and there's room for both digital and film around here.

Best regards,

Mike Galazin
