Uhhhh... gee.... what does UPS insure against? Sounds rediculous. I'd have
taken it up (in all of these cases) with a higher level of manager.Especially
the TV story. And then I'd use another delivery.
FYI, I don't know if the USPS (insurance) is much better. From what I hear,
there are extremely long delays, and the buyer is dependent on the seller to
initiate the claim. (Which is probably true elsewhere also.) You can only
claim actual purchase price rather than "value", even if you got a bargain,
and no partial claims for damage are allowed, i.e. you have to give up the
item completely to get reimbursement. (Probably true elsewhere also). Hard to
do when it is a slightly damaged scarce collectible for example. You also do
not get reimbursed for the shipping charge or insurance fee, just the
purchase price of the item. Fortunately I have generally had good luck with
the USPS, although I was once involved in initiating a claim on an item that
was delayed (actually it was sitting at the post office without any
notification being given to the recipient, and eventually it was sent back to
the seller), so I haven't actually seen the whole process go through
completely. In most cases (with the possible exception of high ticket items)
I tend to "self insure", pack well, and do delivery confirmation just to
protect against unscrupulous or absent-minded buyers or sellers at the other
end. -Linda
