  The diffraction problem is caused by the physical size
(diameter) of the hole not the f-number (which is a ratio).

  So f/22 on a 50 mm lens is about a 2.3 mm hole. If this
is acceptably sharp then you can use f/45 on a 100 mm lens
and f/90 on a 200 mm lens and still get acceptable results.

  In large format cameras the lens focal length tends to
be longer so larger f-numbers are acceptable.
