I'm told this is true and my eyes concur, but can anyone give be a number?

I've converted lots of negative film to NTSC, and that's a dynamic range
compression of from about 12+ stops to about 5 stops. Negatives to paper
prints is about the same level of compression (but without the electronics to
help us get there!) Chromes halftoned and printed is about 6 stops to about 4
stops. Where is digital imaging in terms of dynamic range (0-255 doesn't mean
much to a shooter!)? How about the scanner? How about the cameras? The
computer screens?
