Shorter lenses with enough coverage are not cemented doublets
and so cost more for the extra elements and mounting.

Star D?  The shorter lens needs less focus adjustment but you need
to mount it closer to the transparency although this might be a 
spec too.

I agree.  Not sure if anyone has done the multiplication yet
but 250 pair * 2 per pair * $100 per lens = $50,000.
