Bill Ewald addressed this at the NSA convention in Rochester:

35 mm lenses were originally specified for the Kodaslide II but these
lenses alone would have *cost* $35 (each? per pair? dunno. ) The bean
counters didn't think they could sell the viewers for enough to make a
profit.  None were ever made, even in prototype.  (According to Bill)
