As far as getting bugs to sit still for their portraits,
it used to be people would put them in their refrigerators
for a while.  Slows 'em down enough.

I don't know what you do to catch flying insects but,
(was it Milligan?) someone takes hummingbirds by having
the bird flying into a certain area trigger a sensor 
which sets off the shutters and strobes.
