I don't either, but I've suspected (and mentioned with no violent
objection or agreement) that it has to do with violations of the
equation's assumption of ortho viewing.
Meaning it's not so much as one is reducing depth for projection, but that
one can increase it in viewers (which amounts to the same thing
relative to one another).
One can "stand" more depth in the projected image by sitting far
back in the room (that reduces the "magnification") while likewise
one using a typical viewer is using "magnification" less than
the ortho amount -- like sitting back in the room.
But then, sitting further back also increases the perceived depth
(more of a stretch than depth, but maybe that's the same thing?)

Yes, adding in adapations for non-ortho viewing would be great. If
anything, just to see the effect mathmatically (as well as being
perhaps more useful pragmatically where few people see things at the
ortho spot projected, and close to none who use viewers).
