RE: Wm. Carter's idea that "cardboarding" (cutout figures in
planes??) results from two lenses seems bizarre to me. Does he
imply humans see everything as cardboard figures?? I understand
the concept in lenticular systems with not enough lenses, eg.
Nimslo, Nishika compared to commercial systems with 10 or
more, but this seems a 'resolution' effect.
As to clues Wm. Mortensen (a contempory of Adams) believed
that one should have good enough gradation in a negative that a
white sphere would be recognized as such in a planar photo just on
the difference in brightness due to square law effect on the
distance between surfaces of the sphere to the lens. He
maintained that the rule of 'expose for the shadows and develop for
the highlights' destroyed this kind of gradation! So here is another
clue that eye might use!
