There's no shame in having inferior optics to a Leica, most of us have.

OK, RM has already explained that he's using a purpose-built macro lens
but your 50mm jobs may yet produce better results.  It's not been
mentioned in this thread yet, but are you using a reversing ring?  Tubes
and bellows can cause loss of quality because the lens is being used
outside of the conditions it was designed for.  The (over) simplified
explanation is that standard lenses work best when the object is much
further from the lens than the film.  Macro work is getting on for an
inversion of this condition so reverse the lens and....

Using a reversing ring on my Practica TLwhatever's standard lens gets me
2/3 lifesize with no further extension and excellent quality for the cost.
At least my technique is the limiting factor rather than the lens.  :-D

On the supplimentary lens front, have you ever tried reversing a standard
lens onto the front of your taking lens?  Think about it, it's the highest
quality +20 dioptre lens you're ever likely to own.
