RE: Jon wants to know how to measure FL (focal length) put the 
shutter on time, open to f/3.5  and point lenses at sun and put a 
card behind and move it to smallest image of sun..measure card to 
lens board flange (seating surface). This will be the distance you 
film will have to be in camera. The marked fl on lenses 35mm is 
nominal fl at infinity.   BobH
Good books all out of print are Kingslake and Cox  generally titled 
"Photographic Optics". Crummy one by Greenleaf and some newer 
by Sydney Ray..All are British although Kingslake with American 
Kodak for years.
