T3D interocular question

I just showed a colleague a View-Master reel through a standard Model L
viewer with 65 mm interocular. He claimed he was unable to fuse the two
images. I then measured his interocular distance (pupil to pupil) and it
measured 71 mm. Does the 6 mm difference explain the problem? (For the
record, my interocular is about 64 mm and the images fuse instantly.)
