GIF is lossless but limited to 8bit color (256 colors) so there may
be loss associated with that conversion. PNG is a superior format
to GIF in every respect. It is lossless, internally compressed,
allows 24bit color depth and also avoids possible Unisys GIF patent
problems. Web browsers (Netscape, MSIE) now support PNG internally
too.
