One way is to go to Kodak's web site and download the current data
sheet (see my previous post in this thread). It will be easier to
read there than in this message.
Kodak gives five options, each with a different D-max (which I take to
mean maximum density) and CD (contrast index--similar to gamma but
measured a little differently--and, perhaps more to the point, easier
to calculate). All are for processing at 75/24 degrees F./C. The
information looks like this:
D-max CI time
1.50 0.65 4 min.
1.76 0.80 5 min.
2.00 0.91 6 min.
2.36 1.03 7 min.
2.44 1.15 8 min.
0.65 already is a bit contrastier than average (Kodak seems to take a
CI of 0.58 as standard for pictorial films). CIs of 1.0 and above are
very contrasty, though the target contrast index for HIE in D-19 (a
graphic arts developer specifically for high-contrast work) is 1.65.
The target contrast shown for HIE in D-76 in the data sheet is 0.70;
for HC-110 it's 0.80. I like the results I've been getting with D-76,
but I wouldn't want to drive the contrast higher than that.
