As I'm finding out, 70mm film comes spooled many ways. The Alden unit we
bought came equipped for all possibilities, which includes a variety of
central "spools" that fit over the central shaft. The used unit you saw
was minus some of these central "spools." And I do believe it would be
relatively easy to jury-rig something that would work just as good.

BTW, Kodak 70mm color IR film doesn't require any spool at all. The roll
fits perfectly over the central shaft without any correction "spool"
needed.
