I'm sorry you took it that way.  The two people I knew (slightly, in
both cases) who worked at Pop during the Rothschild era both
considered it a terrible rat-race and felt they were under enormous
commerial pressure.  One of them--who used to go work for them for a
year, quit, do his own thing for a year, and then reapply for his job
again--claimed that the staff all refered to Pop (or perhaps to
Ziff-Davis, which then owned Pop) as "the factory."  The presumption
that if the makers of the filters wanted editorial coverage, they
could get it by taking out an ad comes directly from another of Ziff's
magazines of that period, where I knew, and know, a number of the
staff members.  And I know that they have found ways of preserve their
integrity while doing what Ziff required--which I can only assume
Rothschild did, since I never met him.
