In re: pre-exposure (or pre-flashing)
You might want to try using selective colors (or IR only) to make the
exposure. This would tend to impart the "IR-appropriate" cast to the
shadows, and if you bumped it up a little, even in the darker midtones.
Then again, EIR might be weird enough for you already. I have a
tendency to push the envelope too far, then back off to sanity. Or some
semblance thereof.
I would imagine pre-exposure through a #12 (or your standard filter)
would yield a simple reduction in contrast, assuming the light source
characteristics were the same--to EIR!
