Bio
Gentlemen (are there any ladies in this group?):
My name is Stanley K. Patz, I am a professional photographer, living and
working out of my urban home in New York City, USA.
I moved from Boston to New York to learn my business and sort of got
stuck here. In 1971, I bought a floor in an almost abandoned loft
building, fixed it up a bit and raised a family. I live in the back and
have a studio, darkroom, computer room and workshop in the front.
Commercially, I usually do still life stuff, mostly catalog and ad
illustrations with an occasional corporate, architectural or model shot
in the mix. For myself, I shoot impressionistic studio stills involving
"light-painting". But, in the last year or so, I have done some outdoor
work on infrared film which has brought me to this group.
Although I support many formats (35mm, 6x7, 4x5 and 8x10) almost
everything I shoot is 4x5. I have developed a special field camera
system for outdoor work centered on a 4x5 Meridian B. Recently, I
mounted some old Kodak glass in a modern shutter to get softer looking
scenics. I use Kodak HSI, a Tiffen 25A and a polarizer.
As a child in Boston, I made myself a darkroom in the cellar and learned
photography through trial and error. Up until a year ago, I would have
considered myself a traditionalist, but my 21-year-old son wanted a big
computer for animation. So we got about 10 grand worth of hardware which
included Photoshop. I am now convinced that the computer is one of the
most interesting and important advances in the history of photography.
