You might try some "sliver" mylar tape, similar to what is used to re-mount
35mm slides. The stuff is much thinner than electrical tape (so it might not
cause a scratching problem) and it is adhesive-backed. The adhesive is not
very strong, so you can remove it later. I'm not sure if it's totally opaque
to IR but it is made by depositing metal onto mylar film, so it probably
will work. It's available from most photo supply places as "slide mounting
tape."
