infrared film counters

My fogging problem is indeed due to the infrared film counter. I had an
idea, and tried it - I put a little piece of electrical tape over the
bottom half of the film counter, and shot a roll with it. It did reduce the
problem greatly, to where it wasn't even noticable in many shots, except
where there was a predominance of black in the fogged area. A disadvantage
was that the tape appeared to scratch the negatives from time to time. I
tried another roll, removing tape, and carefully using a black magic marker
to ink over the same area, but as I thought might happen, the fogging was
back, same as before (apparently the magic marker ink is transparent to the
infrared light). Any other ideas?
