The tonal range of people is reduced, it's true, but if you're
doing landscape work, Tech Pan with a 25 or 29 red will bring out
a much wider range of tones in vegetation and clouds. I've used
it quite a bit in 6x9 on 120, and some but not as much in 35mm,
and it produces tones that I haven't managed to duplicate with
any other film.
I've also known people who use Tech Pan with Technidol for
portraiture, and if exposed properly it does give a good range
of skin tones while greatly reducing the appearance of reddish
skin blemishes (acne, birthmarks, many scars, etc.) But this
does require more careful exposure than standard B&W films.

That might also account for the reduced tonal range. I shoot it
at 25 and develop in Technidol, and get relatively low contrast,
still almost grainless, especially off the 6x9 negatives.
If you're metering through the filter, remember that Tech Pan
has extended red sensitivity so the filter factor of the film
will not match the response of the meter. All my TTL cameras
give about 3 stops exposure increase when metering through a 25
red, but the official correction for Tech Pan is 1-2/3 stops.
Either meter without the filter and apply the filter factor, or
calibrate your own meter with a known good exposure as you would
with IR films.
